What is Allergy? Its types and how to diagnose?

 

A sudden sneeze or some kind of itch always makes us wonder, maybe some kind of allergy. Now, what is this allergy? Allergies are reactions of the body's defence system to normally harmless substances such as pollen, food and dust. These substances (allergens) do not pose a problem for most people, but for allergy sufferers, they are perceived as a threat by the immune system and cause an inappropriate response. You might be allergic to flowers or those peanuts in your favourite granola bars. 

 

Here are some of the basic causes of allergies 

 

Almost any drug can cause an allergy, but the ones most likely to cause an allergy are antibiotics, aspirin, insulin, monoclonal antibody therapy, muscle relaxants, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and sulfonamide drugs. , chemotherapy, HIV, and antiepileptic drugs. 

 

Common allergenic foods are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soybeans, wheat, and fish. 

 

Some people are also allergic to animals like dogs or cats. 

 

Contact with everyday items made of natural rubber or latex such as balloons, rubber bands, condoms, diaphragms, rubber household gloves, rubber balls and bandages can cause skin allergies. 

 

Pollen allergy, or hay fever, is one of the most common seasonal allergies caused by pollen released by weeds and trees. 

 

Allergy problems are common and almost everyone we know is allergic to one or the other substance. If you or your loved one seems to be suffering from allergic reactions all the time, we would recommend contacting a clinic that offers diagnostic services to rule out serious reactions.

Allergies are usually diagnosed in three steps: 

 

 A detailed medical history and personal medical history will be obtained by your doctor to evaluate your symptoms and their possible causes.

 

If an allergy is suspected based on your medical history, your doctor will take a closer look at your eyes, ears, nose, throat, skin, and chest and have a physical examination. Your doctor may also do pulmonary function tests or order x-rays of your lungs to determine how well your lungs are functioning. 

 

Your doctor may need to do things like skin, patch, or blood tests for further diagnosis and laboratory tests. Although laboratory test results are not definitive indications of allergy, they are a fairly useful tool in allergy diagnosis. Early control of allergies is very important.
