5 Things you should know before you get MRI

An MRI is done when your doctor prescribes you but having heard the abbreviation, you might have always wondered what it stands for. An MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses radio waves and powerful magnets. These waves, clash with the water and the fat cells that are present in your body and thus send the data to the computer which then sends to the computer for the doctors to look at. Therefore, in simple terms, MRI is a procedure that lets doctors know what is happening inside your body without performing any invasive procedures.

1.  Let your doctor know all your allergies and phobias, conditions

Having an MRI is lying in an enclosed tube-shaped machine for a varying amount of time. This means if you are claustrophobic, this might result in an anxiety attack or anything further worse. It is always better to talk to your doctor about it ahead of time. Not just phobias, but also consult about each of your conditions.

2.  MRIs are safe

Yes, it is an accepted fact that MRIs use radio waves and magnets for imaging but these are not hazards. However, if you do have any concerns regarding the same, consult your physician regarding the same. There is, however, always a safety screen where you must answer every question with utmost honesty

3.  MRIs are not very long

Depending on where you are having the scan done, an MRI can take a while to complete. While some MRIs can be completed in as little as 30 minutes, others might take up to 90. Remember to stay as still as you can; otherwise, you might have to restart.

4.  Lay as still as possible

As said earlier, lay as still as possible. This is mandatory to make sure that the MRI technician can get the pictures needed. Moving can make the pictures unreadable and thus having to restart

5.  Tune out the noise

As the MRI machine is normally loud and does generate some odd noises, you might be provided earplugs. It's normal for there to be a noise like that, so don't panic or try to run away because of it.

Your MRI scan could have a positive or a negative impact but the most important thing to know is to be calm.
